Not all of the apps that I put in front of my preschooler are branded with children's TV characters! the new Lexico cognition is one such app - it has some quite serious learning objectives but with a slight undertone of fun that gives it staying power for my preschooler. When first downloaded Lexico Cognition, I almost dismissed it as too hard for my daughter (approaching 3) to play but I'm glad I gave it a chance.
Lexico-Cognition is a learning app to develop language understanding and to build vocabulary, cognitive, memory and auditory skills in a playful way. It was developed and tested by qualified speech therapists in Switzerland and some of the voices in the app sound like UK english may not be their native tongue (although this has no impact whatsoever on the quality of the app). The app features written and spoken english so your child doesn't need to be able to read in order to play it.
On each level, your child is asked a series of questions. When they think they know which picture holds the answer, they drag the question card over to their selected answer and if it is correct, the square will turn into part of a picture puzzle in the background. The first two levels are entirely picture-based and then some of the other levels then use a combination of spoken questions and image answers.Lexico-Cognition is a learning app to develop language understanding and to build vocabulary, cognitive, memory and auditory skills in a playful way. The levels that my preschooler has enjoyed most so far as ones where the question asks about whether something is to the left or to the right of something else. She also managed well with the games which ask her to identify a person based on a description of their clothing (where some of the people are wearing similar things), and games which require her to work out whether something is next to, or on top of something else. It is really truely fascinating to watch her as she plays - you can see her concentration and how happy she is when she gets an answer correct. I have also noticed that she looks up to me to try and establish whether the answer she is about to choose is correct... in almost all cases she didn't need my help!
Right now, some of the more advanced levels of lexico Cognition are still way beyond her but I'm enjoying watching her learn.
The iPad Version is free to download (with an in-App purchase which allows you to unlock all levels), the iPhone version is also free at present. The two versions differ in features & content.
